Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States — but early detection can make all the difference. Northside Radiology Services is helping patients better understand their heart health through CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring, a fast, simple and low-cost screening exam designed to detect plaque buildup in the coronary arteries.
The noninvasive CT scan measures the amount of hardened calcium, or plaque, in the arteries that supply blood to the heart. The presence of plaque can signal early heart disease — often before symptoms appear. In fact, the exam takes about 15 minutes and can provide critical information that may help prevent a future cardiac event.
Who should consider cardiac calcium scoring?
Cardiac scoring is recommended for:
- Men over 45
- Women over 50
- Individuals with a family history of heart disease or diabetes
- Those with high cholesterol, high blood pressure or diabetes
- Current or former smokers
- Individuals who are overweight or sedentary
- Those experiencing high stress
Patients are encouraged to speak with their physician to determine if cardiac scoring is appropriate for them.
Understanding your calcium score
A calcium score provides insight into the presence of plaque and the associated risk of a future cardiac event:
- Score of 0: No plaque detected. The risk of a cardiac event is very low (less than 5%).
- Score 1–10: Small amount of plaque present. Low risk (less than 10%). Lifestyle improvements such as smoking cessation, healthier eating and increased exercise are encouraged.
- Score 11–100: Definite, mild heart disease is present. Moderate risk. Lifestyle changes and consultation with a physician are recommended.
- Score 101–400: Moderate plaque buildup. Heart disease is present and plaque may be blocking an artery. Risk is moderate to high. Physician consultation is advised to plan treatment.
- Score over 400: Extensive plaque buildup with a high likelihood of artery blockage. Risk for a cardiac event is high. Immediate physician follow-up is important.
Sub-specialized reports provide more than a simple calcium score. They help identify small vessel disease and support informed treatment decisions made collaboratively between the patient and physician, contributing to a comprehensive prevention plan.
CT Cardiac Calcium Scoring is offered at more than 25 Northside locations throughout Metro Atlanta, making it convenient for patients across the region. The exam includes the CT scan and interpretation by a board-certified radiologist.
