A short documentary released internationally shows how Northside Hospital uses new technology to track the health of patients and detect changes in their conditions earlier.

Northside uses the Spacelabs Healthcare Rothman Index®, a predictive analytics platform. BBC StoryWorks Commercial Productions featured Northside’s use of the Rothman Index in a film about advancements that help nurses improve patient care.

“Caring With Courage” will be shown at the annual meeting of the International Council of Nurses, June 9-13 in Helsinki.

The movie features Daniella Johnson, manager of clinical outcomes at Northside Hospital Atlanta, and Michael Rothman, Ph.D., an advisory data scientist who worked with his brother to create the Rothman Index.

Rothman said the Index is the solution to a question they asked after their mother’s death in rehabilitation with aortic stenosis: “Why isn’t there a measure of how sick you are that someone could look at and understand what the course of someone’s (hospital) stay was?”

Johnson discussed her career growth at Northside.

“As a clinical nurse specialist, you still can make such an impact to patients’ lives,” she said. “You may not get to see those changes in person, but you see them in the data. You see the metrics change.”
