According to Dr. Nicole Kounalakis, a surgical oncologist with Northside Melanoma & Sarcoma Specialists of Georgia, skin cancer most often develops on areas of the body that get the most sun, like the head and neck, arms and legs. In people of color, however, skin cancer is more likely to appear on the feet or in the nail beds, areas where it can easily be overlooked.
Dr. Kounalakis says certain groups are at higher risk and may benefit from routine skin cancer screenings, including those with a personal or family history of skin cancer, individuals who are immunocompromised and people with very fair skin or significant sun exposure through work or recreation.
A skin cancer screening involves a full skin check to look for new, changing or concerning moles or lesions. If something looks suspicious, a biopsy may be performed to determine if it’s cancerous. Any new, evolving, or changing pigmented spots, as well as persistent dry or crusty patches, should be evaluated by a clinician, as these could be early signs of skin cancer.
